CHAPTER 6
Rogue Oil
As we’ve seen in China’s actions against Rio Tinto and Google, authoritarian regimes can interpret economic laws to pressure independent international companies doing business within their borders. Still, if the interference stopped there, it wouldn’t be such a problem for the rest of the world. Unfortunately, it often doesn’t. Some governments, especially those sitting on vast reserves of oil, have used the power of their wealth to influence the legal systems in other countries over which they have no control. As the following example shows, this strategy may be outrageous, yet it is all too predictable as the nations of the shadow market gain increasing geopolitical authority.
